Join Soroptimist Book Club!

You’re invited to join SIA’s first book club featuring I Am Malala by our 2022 biennial convention keynote speaker Malala Yousafzai!

Before we end another successful club year, consider adding this engagement opportunity to your club and region activities!

A book club can give members the chance to discuss topics from other perspectives and learn more about one another amidst detailed and engaging conversation.

We were thrilled to have Malala speak with 2021-2022 SIA President Kazuko Morita and 2022-2023 SIA President Stephanie Smith during the last convention. Their inspiring conversation helped us learn more about Malala and our shared desire to help women and girls around the world. We thought it would be wonderful to kick off our annual book club with I Am Malala, a Goodreads Choice Award-winning novel.

I Am Malala is offered in all of SIA’s languages and is readily available on Amazon or from other vendors. Many libraries may have copies to borrow as well. Note, some versions of the book are harder to get than others (specifically Chinese versions), so order your books as soon as possible!

This is an independent engagement opportunity where regions and clubs will organize amongst themselves. This is a great chance for one of your leaders, or a prospective leader, to host their own engaging activity.

First, we suggest your club or region choose a facilitator by the beginning of March. Your facilitator should:

  • Communicate to members to obtain I Am Malala as soon as possible, preferably in March.

  • Pick a meeting date and time (virtual or in person) for members to discuss the book in May or June.

  • Prepare an agenda for members to access by the end of March that details the meeting date and time, when to finish the book, discussion ideas, etc.

  • Optional: Create a Facebook group for your members to discuss and chat before your official meeting.

  • Lead the book club discussion with questions provided by SIA or use your own. Discussion questions will be available to governors and governors-elect in early March as part of their materials for region conferences. (Holding a discussion group during your conference is a great engagement opportunity for members!)

This book club is for your own enjoyment. It is not mandatory—only encouraged. We hope you enjoy this end-of-the-club-year activity!
